Nemberala Beach, a vibrant hub of activity on Rote Island, is a must-visit destination for both locals and tourists alike. Its prime location, lined with resorts and bustling with surf boats, makes it a central point for island life.
Surfers flock here to catch waves at T-Land, enjoy a cold beer at the awesome Boatmen Bar, or simply soak up the laid-back atmosphere. But Nemberala offers more than just surf and sun. It’s a place where local traditions intertwine seamlessly with the international traveler, creating something truly unique that we don’t see in many other places in Indonesia.
Let’s explore Nemberala Beach.
Where is Nemberala Beach
Nemberala beach lines the shore of the town Nemberala in the South West corner of Rote Island, Indonesia. It is a long stretch of palm lined beachfront, where white sand meets clear blue waters.
How To Get To Nemberala Beach
First you’ll need to get to Rote (more on that here) and then you will head to Nemberala. Depending on where you are staying in Nemberala you will never be more than a few minutes from the beach.
Our go to spot is at the Boatmen Bar which is near where you will find the harbour and local boats and what we consider the middle of Nemberala Beach. You will find plenty of parking for right on the beach edge.
From here you can walk in either direction along the shoreline, catch a boat out to the surf or grab refreshing drink.

Activities at Nemberala Beach
While surfing might be the main draw for many, Nemberala Beach offers a bunch of other activities for all types of travellers:
Surf
While Nemberala Beach is undoubtedly beautiful, it’s the world-class waves that put it on the map for many travellers. The beach is home to the famous T-Land, a 300-yard long left reef break that has put Rote on the surf map.
What makes Nemberala’s surf so special?
- Consistency: The waves here are remarkably reliable, especially from May to August when swells are at their peak and the trade winds mean it’s offshore all day everyday/
- Variety: While T-Land might hog the limelight, there are waves suitable for various skill levels around Nemberala.
- Relatively Uncrowded: Unlike many famous surf spots, Nemberala remains relatively uncrowded, allowing for a more relaxed surfing experience.
Fishing
Anglers will find plenty to love about Nemberala Beach. The waters here are rich with marine life, offering opportunities to catch impressive species like tuna, wahoo, mahi-mahi and marlin. Whether you’re a seasoned fisherman or trying it for the first time, local guides can help you make the most of your fishing trips.
If spear fishing is your thing, you will find plenty of great spots around Nemberala beach thanks to the reef and deep water channels.
Island Hopping
Nemberala Beach serves as an excellent base for exploring the surrounding islands due to the local boats that come and go from the natural harbour in Nemberala.
- Do’o Island: Known as Pancake Island, Do’o is an uninhabited island, with pristine beaches, excellent snorkeling spots and a rare but exceptionally good right hand wave.
- N’Dao Island: Further out than Do’o, in the evenings you will see the N’Dao lighthouse flashing. This island offers a glimpse into traditional island life and is home to some beautiful, secluded beaches. Also very good waves for those willing to put in the time.
Learn About Rote Culture
One of our favourite things about Nemberala beach is that traditional culture still exists. Even with the development of surf resorts along the shores, the local community still farm seaweed as they have for generations, fisherman arrive and sell fish straight from the boats in the harbour.
In the few beachfront areas that haven’t been developed you will find seaweed or small salty fish drying, and every generation of the local community playing their part and all with the biggest smiles. Kids swinging from palm trees and carrying things for their parents, adults seeing to the seaweed, grandparents passing on their knowledge. It is truly beautiful and something that we at Rote Guide are aiming to preserve.
When visiting Nemberala beach, take some time to
- Learn about traditional Rotinese customs and way of life
- Show interest in what the locals are doing
- Offer to carry a bag of seaweed back from the reef (You will make someones day)
- Smile and speak to people. You might not be able to speak the language, but gestures and kindness go a very long way.
It’s up to us to preserve what makes Nemberala Beach so special.
Nemberala Beach Accommodation
As the name suggests, Nemberala Beach is in, you guessed it, Nemberala. Which means there are plenty of accommodation options close by that cater for all budgets and requirements. Fom luxury resorts through to local homestays and B&Bs.
Nemberala Beach Bars
If a cold beer or maybe even a cocktail is sounding good right now, you will want to know where to grab a drink while taking in the epic views and surroundings of Nemberala Beach.
While many of the Nemberala Beach Resort bars are not open to non-guests, there are several that are.
The Boatmen Bar
Grass roots, local vibes, sand between your toes, literally on Nemberala beach, under the palms, music, soft lighting, best sunset views ever and an epic local crew means the Boatmen Bar gets our number one spot.
Sunset is the busiest time so stop by to meet other travellers visiting Rote, and the local crew of surfers, boat captains and surf photographers who all hang out here. It offers a sense of community that you cannot find anywhere else.
81 Palms
A very different affair to the Boatmen Bar, 81 Palms is a much more luxury establishment. A perfect date night spot, you will find comfy chairs, and even a beach swing bench overlooking the white sand of Nemberala Beach, and of course the amazing sunsets we keep talking about.
They serve beers, wines and cocktails and are open from breakfast to around 10pm everyday. You will also find some of the best food in Nemberala here cooked by Michelin-rated chef Jose.
Nemberala Beach Resort
Another resort with a bar open to the public is Nemberala Beach Resort, or NBR to some. Here you will find big lounger chairs on a terrace, smack on Nemberala beach. The bar is one of the biggest in Nemberala and stocks pretty much everything you can think of. They are known to whip up a pretty mean Margarita.
You will also find Taco Tuesday going on here, every Tuesday from 5pm, often with live music and a large crowd. So get in on time to not miss out on Tacos. Great social vibe on Tuesdays, but pretty quiet the rest of the week.
Shipwreck Bar
One of the busiest bars in Nemberala, Shipwrecks is a great spot owned by Kim and Steve and is part of Bellar Reef Bungalows. Without doubt the coldest beers in Rote, often beaten out of almost solid ice.
You will find an undercover area with a flat screen TV where you can catch all the NRL, AFL games, or even the F1 as well as some tables and chairs on the sand of Nemberala Beach.
