We will just leave this bit here……… Foreigners riding motorbikes in Indonesia must adhere to the country’s traffic laws and regulations to ensure safety and compliance. Here are the key requirements:

Valid Driver’s License

To legally ride a motorbike in Indonesia, foreigners need an International Driving Permit (IDP) that covers motorbike categories (Class A or equivalent, depending on your home country). Your IDP must be carried along with your home country’s driver’s license. Alternatively, if you plan to stay long-term, you can obtain an Indonesian driver’s license through the local traffic police .

Helmet

Wearing a helmet is mandatory for both riders and passengers. Failure to wear a helmet can result in fines and increased risk of injury in case of an accident.

Vehicle Registration and Documents

When renting a bike, ensure it has proper registration papers (STNK) and is roadworthy.

Age Limit

The minimum legal age to ride a motorbike in Indonesia is 17 years.

License Specifications

Riders must ensure they are riding a bike they are licensed to operate. For example, a SIM C license allows you to ride bikes up to 250cc, while higher-capacity bikes may require additional licensing.

Fines and Enforcement

Although etremely rare in Rote, traffic violations can result in fines, which are typically paid on the spot. If stopped by the police, remain polite and comply with their requests.
