Indonesia has revised its visa-free exemption policy, drastically reducing the list of eligible countries from 169 to just 13.
This change, implemented through Presidential Regulation No. 95 of 2024, marks a significant shift in Indonesia’s immigration policy. Below, we’ll outline the details of this updated policy, including eligible countries, application processes, and the reasons behind the changes.
In March 2016, Indonesia introduced Short Stay Visa-Free Facilities for tourists through Presidential Decree No. 21 of 2016, allowing nationals from 169 countries on Indonesia’s Visa-Free Country List to enter Indonesia visa free.
But in August 2024 President Joko Widodo signed the Presidential Regulation No. 95 of 2024 that drastically reduced the list of eligible countries from 169 to only 13.
What is the Visa-Free Exemption Policy?
The Visa-Free Exemption, or Free Visa, allows nationals from specific countries to enter Indonesia without applying for a visa in advance. This visa is:
- Free of charge and granted upon arrival at immigration checkpoints.
- Valid for a 30-day stay, which cannot be extended or converted to another visa type.
- Intended for purposes such as tourism, government visits, transit, purchasing goods, and attending meetings.
While this policy previously applied to travelers from 169 countries, it now only applies to 13 countries as of 2024.
Visa-Free Exemption Eligibility and Limitations
To enter Indonesia, all travelers must:
- Hold a passport valid for at least six months from their date of arrival.
- Hold a passport issued by one of the listed 169 countries.
- Present proof of onward or return travel (e.g., flight tickets).
The Tourist Visa-Free Facility is:
- Valid for stays of up to 30 days.
- Non-extendable and cannot be converted to another type of visa. (You must leave Indonesia within 30 days of arrival)
- You must enter and exit Indonesia via one of the 124 authorized Immigration Checkpoints in airports, seaports and land borders.
Who is the Visa Free Exemption Best for?
The Visa-Free Exemption is ideal for travelers planning short visits to Indonesia for purposes like tourism, family visits, attending cultural events, or transit. It suits those from eligible countries who only need a brief stay of up to 30 days without the need for an extended visa. This exemption is perfect for vacationers, short-term business travelers, or those stopping over on their way to another destination. However, it is important to note that the visa exemption cannot be extended or converted into another type of visa, so it’s best for travelers with clear, short-term plans.
This Visa Exemption Applies to Visits For:
- Tourism
- Family or social purposes
- Cultural or artistic activities
- Government assignments
- Attending seminars, international exhibitions, or meetings with representative offices in Indonesia
- Transit purposes
