Arriving in Rote Island

Whether you’re arriving by ferry or by flight, the journey to Rote Island is the beginning of an unforgettable adventure.

Here’s what you can expect when you arrive at Ba’a Port or Rote Island Airport.

Arriving by Flight at Rote Island Airport (RTI)

For those flying to Rote Island, David Constantijn Saudale Airport (RTI) located near Ba’a, about 45 minutes from Nemberala and is the island’s only airport.

Flights from Kupang typically take just 30 minutes, offering amazing views of the islands and bright blue ocean along the way. Upon arrival at the airport, you’ll find a welcoming, small terminal with basic amenities, such as restrooms and waiting areas. There is only one baggage claim which is immediately on your left as you enter the building.

It is recommended that you arrange transportation from the airport before arrival into Rote.

As there are no international flights to Rote Island, you will already of had to complete the immigration and visa process upon entry into Indonesia, so there is no immigration process on arrival in Rote.

Arriving by Ferry at Ba’a Port

For many travelers, the first steps onto Rote Island are at Ba’a Port, the main ferry terminal on the island.

Ferries depart from Kupang, the capital of West Timor, and the crossing takes about two to three hours depending on the sea conditions. Once you disembark at Ba’a Port, you’ll be greeted by a bustling but the relaxed, island atmosphere with stunning views of Rote’s coastline. The port is lively but not overcrowded, so it’s easy to find your way to the exit.
